Her Father Daughter edition by Gene StrattonPorter Reference eBooks

Written during WWII or soon after, this is the story of a young girl, Linda Strong raised by her Father in California who shares his knowledge of the beauty of the state with her when he was alive. When her parents pass away unexpectedly, she is left with her sister Eileen in a big house with much wealth. Her sister wastes much of the money on herself until one day young Linda has an awakening and realizes what is happening. She takes matters into her own hands, talks to the town banker and learns to provide some for herself doing what she enjoys. Immigrants are part of the story who at that time in history, were.. not welcome in the US as they may be now. Romance, enjoyable repartee, California flora and fauna as well as outdoor recipes, and even murder are all pieces of this wonderful old story. Delightful reading. Keep in mind the period it was written to be more amenable to the story.

Her Father Daughter edition by Gene StrattonPorter Reference eBooks Reviews

Gene Stratton-Porter is one of my all time favorite authors. Written in the war era one has to take the Yellow-mania with a grain of salt and realize that the author would hopefully temper such bigotry in this day and age.
The prose sings when it describes the landscape of California in the early 20s, and we glimpse the effect of WWI on popular thought as literature tries to cheer lead the population on to greater heights--but there's an ugly narrowness that makes large portions of the plot difficult to read.
It is was wonderful story, all of Gene's work is wonderful. Now the formatting of this book is horrible!!! The pages are not broken up, and it takes time to understand the horrendous work that the formats did. The pages just run together, it's a mess. I would never tell anyone to buy this version of this book.
My mother read the Gene Stratton-Porter books to me when I was a little girl. They formed a major part of my platform for ethics and values, without me even realizing it. You might not love the dated language and settings as much as I did, but it's worth the time to reacquaint yourself with a world that was quaint and tender and untouched by technology. The stories are timeless and the conflicts continue in the human condition today, so the stories never disappoint in their plot and character--even today.
I have loved Gene Stratton Porter books since I was in grade school. The only problem with this title is Ms. Porter's prejudice against Japanese people. It can be understood in context of the time it was written, when the confinement camps for people of Japanese ancestry were suspect. Outside of the racial bias, an excellent plot and well written story.
Well written by a famous award winning author. Some topics are not politically correct in today's market. My biggest complaint is with the publisher. Many words are misspelled, the font is very small, indentations do not exist, and the illustrations are a joke! When I read this book while in high school many years ago, the book was thick and well printed. I suggest that a reader search for an older book rather than this newly printed hack job!
It's an interesting story, but its anti-Japanese pre WWII bias makes understanding the internment of Japanese on the West Coast more understandable. It's hopes for the future of womanhood are a little unrealistic, especially from today's viewpoint. The story is interesting but the rights of a 17-year-old girl seem a little unrealistic. All that said, I did enjoy the story as well as the atmosphere.
