I really enjoyed this book. Of course I love books with magic and stuff anyway, but I really liked the characters and the way the book was written too. I see a great future for this series, at least I hope so.I was impressed with the writing for sure, as I said, its well written, the story just flows seamlessly and there is not a single part out of place, which was nice.
The characters were very well described, and could see them in my head. Kat, our heroine was a great friend to everyone, not a bit of evil intent in her at all. The Brotherhood and Bronwyn were great friends, their friendship with Kat and each other went to a high level, more like family.
I love how Kat is such an amazing, strong and independent person, who does not follow the crowd.
Now Blaze is a hot, and nice guy, but he finds out about himself that he isn't perfect, and he does have some great friends. I really liked Blaze.
In a lot of ways this book does remind me of The Secret Circle, has those same elements, new girl to town, "circle" of friends, who are more than they seem, the magic of course. I read those books and seen the tv series, but I think in many ways this one is even better.
I do not want to spoil anything, but do highly recommend this book. I was on the edge of my seat, and think you will be too.

Kat is the queen bee at her school. She is the typical rich girl and has everything. Her clique though, bully people and Kat does nothing to stop it. When the bullying turns deadly Kat knows she has to turn her life around. She flies out to live with her mother and to get away from all the memories of her old life. She starts the new school and befriends Bronwyn. At lunch Bronwyn takes Kat to a trendy restaurant, while there a group of boys walk in. They are all tall, athletic and gorgeous, but Kat finds her eyes drawn to one boy in particular.
Blaze is the son of the First. He is a particularly strong Warlock and leads The Brotherhood. The Brotherhood consists of Etienne, Sebastian, Quintavius and Cody. All of them are strong warlocks and committed to fighting the evil that is Seth and The Dark Ones. When he first sees Kat she ends up in the middle of a fight and gets hurt. He has to wipe her memory and pretend they never met. He knows its dangerous to get involved with her because she isn't a witch but he is drawn to her.
The author approached me to review The Coven, and whilst I'd never heard of it after reading the blurb I jumped at the chance. I love witchy books and this sounded really good, well I'm glad to say it was so so good.
I loved Kat. She totally transforms from the mean girl to a girl you really want as a friend. She is really sorry for what happened at her old school and vows to never let anything like that happen again. She stands up to the Clique and defends her friends now. She is strong, capable, kind and brave.Even though she isn't a witch she is still kick ass and wont go down without a fight.
Blaze and the rest of the boys are awesome. They are all athletic and gorgeous but down to earth. Blaze has never known anyone like Kat and instantly falls for her strength and beauty. Even though its dangerous to date her he cant help but try. I loved how their relationship progressed. Blaze is the type of boy every girl dreams about!!
The romance was well handled. Blazed is used to girls falling at his feet but Kat isn't one of them. She used to date boys just like Blaze and thinks he is nothing but a dumb jock. Its not till she sees how nice and kind he is that she starts falling for him.
I also loved the camaraderie between all the boys. They joke and mess around but they are like brothers and each would die for each other.
The story is well written and with lots of character development. There is a ton of magic throughout the book and its fast paced and action packed. Verdell Walker can sure write swoon worthy boys and awesome fight scenes!! I was engrossed from beginning to end and cant wait for book 2.
Where do I even begin with reviewing this book? I absolutely loved this book! It was so much more than what I was expecting. It was written very well and I was impressed. It's much more than your typical girl-meets-boy romance. It is magical in more than one way. There are witches and warlocks, awesome action scenes, romance, friendship, bullying, a jealous ex-girlfriend, and more.
Kat Grey was born and raised in Beverly Hills, CA. She was the queen bee and she didn't stop her posse from making fun of people or being mean and one of their victims ended up killing herself. When this happened, Kat completely changed. Since her parents had divorced she was living with her dad but now it was time to move to the East and be with her mom. I absolutely loved Kat. It was so nice seeing her become an amazing person. She is definitely one of the best main characters I've read in a while. She took the mistakes she made in Beverly Hills and completely redefined herself in Milton. I applaud her and wish more people realized their mistakes and changed for the better.
I loved the secondary characters as well. Claire (Kat's mom) was a mom I really enjoyed. You could just tell how much love she had for her daughter. Bronwyn reminded me of a few of my best friends and it was really nice being able to connect to the story in that way. And then there was the Brotherhood which consisted of Blaze, Q, Etienne, Sebastian, and Cody. I loved them and they kicked ass against The Dark Ones (evil, soul-less, face-less minions under their leader, Seth's rule).
The magic that was inside this book was really cool. More than your typical witch powers. Dematerializing, manipulating the weather, morph into any animal, control elements, influence others' minds, and much more. Not to mention Verdell Walker brought in some history with the Salem Witch Trials as well. It was really cool having that within the book.
I also have a new book boyfriend and his name is Maximilian 'Blaze' Ward. He is so dreamy! He's gentlemanly, protective, hot, charming, smart, humorous, and quick-witted. The chemistry that Blaze and Kat have was perfect! I loved reading the scenes between them. They had a lot of obstacles including his ex-girlfriend, Hannah and The Dark Ones, but they prevailed.
I can't wait to get my hands on a sequel because this is just one world I don't want to leave. And Verdell Walker definitely knows how to make swoon-worthy boys and write some pretty awesome action-packed scenes. I will definitely be wanting to read more of her work!
