The South Pacific Islands can be both beautiful and mysterious; friendly yet guarded; poor but possessing a wealth of secrets. Take a journey with James Clark, a young, idealistic aid worker as he attempts to break down cultural barriers in an effort to help, but comes up against the bamboo wall; a wall that obstructs him from becoming fully accepted in village life; a wall that hides many dark surprises; a wall that serves as a filter distorting this young aid worker’s understanding of island life… and maybe even his own.

I enjoy reading books set in other countries and I really this book. This memorable story appears inspired by the author’s experiences as a volunteer aid worker in the South Pacific. It’s a combination of travel writing and a story of an outsider’s attempt to make sense of a remote and undeveloped part of the world. But, where a travel guide is an outside view looking in, this author is able to write from the perspective of seeing the islands and culture from the inside looking out. The author provides rich detail about a remote part of the world that most people would never have the opportunity to see. I found the stories about how the islanders interpret illness as a result of black magic very interesting. The story leads to the protagonist getting caught up in the mystery of the island himself and ends with a twist. I would recommend itProduct details

This is a really unique insight into life on a small South Pacific Island. It is from true personal experiences and well worth reading.
