Good read for bedtime stories or even as a way to start off your older kids on chapter books. Each chapter teaches a necessary moral and/or life lesson. The characters and scenes are brought to life by amazing illustrations. This is a book to be loved by the parents and kids alike. Can't wait for the next book in the series!
This book is about a quest on a tiny scale. Two fairies and their friends are looking for an evil spider-witch's secret spiderweb, which is hidden somewhere in a huge forest. Their journey takes sometimes strange, sometimes hazardous, always adventurous turns. The book is a pretty good read for kids 8-10. The chapters are short enough not to be overwhelming. It's illustrated with some great drawings, so there is stuff for them to look at. The characters are anything but generic. Some are old and grumpy, some are hyper and talkative, and some are reckless and slightly demented. In short, the world isn't whimsical. It feels real and lived in. There are births, deaths, victories, defeats, and injuries that have long-term consequences. Both of the main characters are changed by their experiences, and not in superficial ways, either. There are plenty of amusing scenes for older readers. In particular, the scene where the elders are trying to choose villagers to look for the spider's web was entertaining, with its subtle digs at the political process. Also, the scenes with Jack the retired swordsrabbit and his wife Emma really made me smile. Probably my favorite scene was the rainstorm. I never really thought about how dangerous a falling raindrop could be to a fairy, until I read this book.
