The Damsel in This Dress is one of the few romance novels I have come back to time and time again, it's one of my absolute favourites. I love the characters, the storyline, and the chemistry between Betsy and Soldier. Even though I know the storyline well enough to rewrite the book, Ms Stillings still manages to capture my attention and keep me hooked until the very last page. Our leading lady, Betsy, is a critic & editor for a regional newspaper. She's also being stalked by a crazy co-worker and she's in denial about it. Lucky for her, the homicidal lunatic breathing down her neck sent her reviews to Soldier McKennett, author, detective and all round hotty. Though he's dead set on loathing the scathing Betsy, it's love at first sight. And with Soldier on the case to protect Betsy, her chihauau, her brain damaged father, her ecentric mother and her french Dick the story is a corny laugh a minute!
I am thrilled to have found a new author that I love! Marianne Stillings writes great dialogue, especially between her two main characters. It's crisp, clean and sometimes catches me off guard with her humor. Ms. Stillings makes me laugh out loud, something I have only done when reading Janet Evanovich. The situation her leading lady and man find themselves in early on in the plot left me both giggling and groaning! This fast read makes The Damsel in This Dress a perfect weekender after a long, grueling work week. I can't wait for more.
A quick read with great characters, lame humor, and an interesting plot, that blends together beautifully. I read to escape and this book was a great escape. I am not a literary expert, but I love Ms. Stillings writing style. I can't wait to read more of her books.
I just finished this book yesterday and I loved it. I laughed through the entire thing. The witty banter between the H & H was so fun to read, kept me chuckling long after I put the book down. She was cute and he was charming and I felt like they were friends. Even guessing who the "bad guy" was didn't spoil the book for me. Loved it. Highly recommend it. (One of the best edited books I've read, too.)
When police detective turned bestselling author J. Soldier McKennitt receives yet another bad review of his latest novel by Port Henry Ledger critic Betsy Tremaine, he is convinced she is a bitter old spinster, especially after receiving an odd email from her in response to his request for more insight to her opinion. His brother jokes that when he goes to the upcoming writing conference, he'll find she is gorgeous and fall for her. Taylor couldn't have called it better, as Betsy is the embodiment of sex in Soldier's eyes. The two are immediately attracted until the realize who the other is. But it appears that Betsy is the target of a killer who wants to silence her. Can she trust Soldier to help her find the culprit?
Stillings has a refreshingly witty and funny writing style that is sure to entertain. Soldier and Betsy make a dynamic couple and are at their best when they are arguing. My favorite scene is the short story they compose in a writing workshop - that alone is worth the price of the book. She also makes secondary characters like Taylor and Betsy's best friend Claire stand out. Though bogged down with a pretty predictable villain and Betsy's ever present insecurities, the story is very entertaining. Taylor and Claire get their own story in "Sighs Matter."
This is my first Book from Marianne Stillings but it won't be my last. It was a quick read and very entertaining. The main characters were likable and well thought-out. Heroine, Betsy, was intelligent and kind with just enough self-esteem issues to be real and interesting. Hero was gorgeous and flawed, just the way I like them. The dialogue was sometimes police blotter crisp and sometimes bad-pun goofy but all the time true to the story and interesting. The supporting characters were wacky and still interesting. I can't wait to read more of this author.

"Port Henry Ledger Book Review by Betsy Tremaine WRONG GUY HAS THE WRITE STUFF IN TORRID LOVE STORY
"Let me tell you, dear reader, I've rarely been subjected to such drivel as I have in the novels of bestselling tough-guy cop-turned-author J. Soldier McKennitt. The man himself, however, is considerably more interesting. Having finally met him at a recent writers' conference in Seattle, I am pleased to report that Soldier is a tall, dark, and gorgeous hunk of literary superstar. To my surprise, he became quite the charmer once his self-righteous indignation evaporated ... Could it have been this critic's blonde hair and hourglass figure that brought about such an abrupt turnaround? Or perhaps our Soldier boy was simply vanquished by this reviewer's intelligence and caustic wit. In any case, due to the recent emergence of a crazed stalker, this plot has since thickened uncomfortably, and Detective McKennitt has brashly assumed the role of my knight in shining Brooks Brothers.
"Bottom Line The only thing standing in the way of a beautiful relationship in this love story is the fact that the two protagonists are so deliriously, passionately wrong for each other!"
