Soul Destruction: Unforgivable tells the story of Shelley Hansard, a 21-year-old woman who has been working for three years as a call girl in London, under the employ of a number of madams and escort agencies. Shelley has previously endured four attacks by clients, including being raped and beaten, but has never lodged a complaint with the police because of her circumstances. One night, a client dies whilst in her company, sending Shelley into a downward spiral of destructive behavior and an ever-increasing dependency on drugs. Addicted to heroin and crack, Shelley resorts to getting her drugs where and when she can, even from strangers in the street. She uses drugs to forget, but often forgets too much, waking up in the company of strangers, and often with unaccounted-for earnings.
A compulsive cleaner, Shelley eases her anxiety by vacuuming and rearranging her books and videos. Her OCD leads her to manually check her car doors and the locks on the doors and windows of her flat to a nearly debilitating extent. Things finally come to a head when Shelley and her call girl friends Nicole and Tara, decide to get revenge on a client they discover has raped them all.
Shelley's story is slowly and cleverly revealed by the author. We are left to put together the pieces of the puzzle, eventually finding out what happened to Shelley's brother William, her mother Rita, her unknown father, her friends Nicole and Tara, and to Shelley herself, to make her the way she is.
The author's knowledge of the subject matter is extensive and apparent. She has drawn characters who are at the same time repulsive and sympathetic. This book is skillfully structured, with twists and turns I didn't see coming (and that's from someone who always guesses the plot-lines of TV shows). My only disappointment is in the cliff-hanger ending clearly setting us up for the sequel, which I cannot wait to read.
I received this book for the purposes of providing an honest review.

Ruth Jacobs is a 5-star advocate for women caught in addiction and sex trades. She knows her setting and characters.
SDU starts out with scenes involving a dead john that Shelley fears she might be accused of killing, and the nasty woman who arranged the "date." But the plot I expected from that beginning never really materialized. A plot of sorts emerged toward the end, but I can't say I recommend the vengeance-driven violence portrayed there.
If not a standard plot, what else does the book give us? Prostitutes doing drugs, with graphic detail. Over and over again. Scrounging for money to score the dope. Banding together yet deceiving each other. Deceiving their dysfunctional families. Deceiving themselves. Maddeningly squandering opportunities. Descending deeper into psychosis. In other words, Jacobs delivers a story of drug addiction and prostitution, exactly as promised.
This is not a fun read, and I do not recommend this book for squeamish or easily offended readers. However, there is value in being confronted by its scenes of unrelenting depression and self-destruction, because real people live those scenes every day.

Forgiveness is a hard concept for many to grasp. There are many quotes on forgiving oneself and others that could fill a book. I won't give you one. All I'll say is that the world would be better off if people would forgive and forget, including one's own stupid actions.
Ruth Jacobs' novel is a crime against forgiveness. There isn't a character in this tale of sex, drugs, and crime that has the capacity to forgive, because each of the main characters is wrapped up in their own self-pity. This,
Ms. Jacobs has well developed. The three prostitutes, Shelly (Main Character,) Nicole, and Tara, have all not forgiven or forgotten their pasts and have used their individual pasts as a reasons for being where they are in the present.
This character driven story delves into the minds of intelligent individuals whose minds are altered by drugs and the life style they have chosen. Their decision making has been so impaired that they go over the edge, committing an unforgivable crime stemmed from the fact that no one in the group of three can forgive, forget, and move on, which might have stopped the crime.
Ruth's writing moves the reader to peaks of disbelief that can only be described as horrific. You feel the compassion in what she has portrayed as the life of a prostitute in the UK and feel the distress in how her characters come to their conclusions.
If you're looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your reading chair, this is a crime novel that will keep your attention.
If you're looking for a pleasant sort of read, Ruth Jacobs "Unforgivable" is not it. Honest books about the world of prostitution, drugs and addiction show what the life is really about, and it is not in any way a pretty one. Her novel about Shelley and her friends is chilling, lonely, and radically disconnecting. As I know from my own experience of active alcohol addiction, and from the subsequent work that I've did addicts, her novel presents a very clear picture of the world addicts and prostitutes live in.
I found the novel very difficult to read as I followed the lives of Shelley and her friends as their world shrinks around them, for Shelley shrinking to the point that it fits her like shrink wrap. Heroin is a very jealous lover that she won't break free of until she gets help. Does she? That part of the story is not clear; again, that's the world we addicts live in until, accepting help, we walk away from it.
I recommend this fine novel without reservation for everyone to read. Keep a box or two of tissues handy, because you'll need them. Thank you, Ruth Jacobs, for writing and publishing this.
